Loon & Eagle Preservation

The BLCOA works to preserve the loons, eagles, and their habitats here on Bow Lake. A network of dedicated volunteers monitor and research our loons and eagles, and seek to educate the community on the importance to taking proper precautions when around all loons, eagles and their habitats.

Lake Host

The Lake Host™ Program is a courtesy boat inspection program administered by NH LAKES in cooperation with BLCOA to prevent the introduction and spread of aquatic nuisance species (both plants and animals) from waterbody to waterbody. Our Bow Lake’s hosts are the first “official” friendly faces visiting boaters will see as they enter/or leave the Water Street boat launch area on weekends. Hosts will survey boaters about boating care and conduct a courtesy boat and trailer inspection to remove all hitchhiking pieces of aquatic nuisance species. For more information visit Lake Host.

Water Quality

Monitoring Bow Lake water quality is the dedicated work of several BLCOA members and a group of lake residents. Water samples from deep lake areas are drawn every two weeks, and shallow water sampling occurs monthly. Partnering with the New Hampshire Lakes Lay Monitoring Program (LLMP) and UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, samples are analyzed for oxygen, clarity, PH, color and cyanobacteria. By several of our measures, Bow Lake is pristine. But, we do have some concerns about increasing dissolved color of the lake, as well as oxygen depletion in the deeper waters. The LakeSmart program helps to advise property owners on how to minimize sediment and other pollutants that enter the lake.
